Welcome to Los Altos

Los Altos - Lifestyle and History - Stu Shepherd | Renovato & Co.

What is it like to live in Los Altos?

Nestled along the mountains to the west of Mountain View, Los Altos has worked hard to retain a rustic, small-community feel amidst the pressures that go along with being in the heart of Silicon Valley. The area was originally known as one of the premier apricot-producing centers of the world.

Paul Shoup of the Southern Pacific railroad wanted to link Los Gatos with Palo Alto and purchased the land which is now Los Altos from the infamous Sarah Winchester in 1906. Mostly orchards at the time, it became known as Los Altos for being on the highest strip of land in the system. The area retained its agricultural heritage until the pressure from Mountain View and Palo Alto forced it to incorporate as a city in 1952, to avoid being annexed by one of its neighbors.

With zoning that constricts commercial development to the strip along Main Street, Los Altos strives to maintain a semi-rural atmosphere. Much of the city requires large lots for housing and deters the incorporation of sidewalks and street lamps.

While not the home for massive corporations, Los Altos has contributed to the high-tech revolution: Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak built the first Apple Computers in a garage there in 1976, while in 2004 Mark Zuckerberg rented a house now known as "Casa Facebook," which served as a meeting place during the foundation of that massively impactful project. While not the location of the businesses, many of the founders and current workers in the high-tech world lived in Los Altos.

Los Altos holds onto its community feel with such events as the Festival of Lights and the Los Altos Pet Parade.
