Three Different Schedules Shape Fall at Vasona and Oak Meadow

September 17, 2026

On a normal Saturday morning at Oak Meadow Park, the line for the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad used to form before the ticket window even opened. A parent balances a stroller on the gravel path near the carousel. Somebody's toddler points at the bend in the track and yells about the train before it's even visible. That has been the shape of a Los Gatos Saturday since early June. Then the schedule changed.

The railroad's summer schedule ran June 6 through August 9 this year, according to its own posted hours. Once that window closed, the operation stepped down to a leaner pattern. It isn't the only thing that shifted. County boat-inspection rules and the Great Race also affect plans at this stretch of park land. If Vasona Lake County Park and Oak Meadow Park are part of your weekly routine, checking the relevant schedules and rules can help you plan ahead.

The train runs on its own clock, not the park's

The Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad has circled the same loop through Oak Meadow and Vasona since 1970, run by a nonprofit that traces back to 1968. It sets its own hours, and those hours have nothing to do with what the Town of Los Gatos or Santa Clara County Parks is doing around it. The summer stretch that just ended ran from June 6 through August 9. What comes next follows the pattern the railroad has settled into in past years: steam locomotives on weekends into October, then the two diesel engines taking over the weekend and holiday schedule from November through March.

If your Saturday walk through Oak Meadow includes watching your kid wave at the engineer, this is the season to check the railroad's own hours page before you go, especially on a weekday afternoon when the summer version of the schedule would have had a train running and the fall version might not.

How the boat rules affect rentals and personal vessels

Vasona itself doesn't allow anyone to launch a personal boat on the water. All of the kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, and pedal boats out on the lake come from LGS Recreation, the concessionaire that runs Vasona's fleet directly, a setup Santa Clara County Parks confirms on the park's own page. So when the county tightened its boat inspection rules twice this year, none of it changed anything about renting a boat at Vasona.

Where it does matter is the rest of your kayak's life. On June 15, Santa Clara County Parks ended reciprocal banding between reservoirs as part of a broader effort with Valley Water to keep an invasive species called the golden mussel out of local waterways. An exit band earned at Coyote Lake now only lets that boat relaunch at Coyote Lake, not anywhere else in the county system. Since September 14, the rule has been in effect: any vessel subject to the quarantine arriving without an approved band has to sit through a 30-day quarantine before it touches county water at all, even if the boat is already registered in Santa Clara County. Nonpowered vessels like kayaks and paddleboards are exempt from the quarantine itself but still have to pass inspection every time. The push traces back to the golden mussel's first confirmed North American detection in 2024, and county officials describe the tighter banding as a way to stop a boat that picked up mussels somewhere else from carrying them into a clean reservoir.

None of that changes a Saturday spent renting a paddleboat at Vasona. It changes the planning for anyone whose kayak also spends weekends at Calero Reservoir or Coyote Lake, both of which allow personal vessels. That boat now has to pass inspection every time it hops from one county reservoir to another, rather than relying on a band from its previous reservoir.

The one Saturday morning worth circling on the calendar

September 26 is the date to hold. The Rotary Club of Los Gatos runs its 48th Annual Great Race that morning, with a Kids Fun Run starting at 8am and the main event at 8:30, covering four miles of trail through Vasona and Oak Meadow, with a two-mile option alongside it. The course crosses sections of trail that regular park users rarely walk, backed by an aid station and course marshals keeping several hundred runners on route, with a Fun and Fitness Fair once they cross the finish.

The race has a long history of running along Highway 9 between Los Gatos and Saratoga before settling into its current home on the Vasona and Oak Meadow trails. For anyone whose Saturday routine includes an early dog walk or jog through Oak Meadow, checking the race route beforehand can help with planning that morning.

One park, organizations with separate roles

What reads as a single continuous space, the kind of place where you can start at Lexington Reservoir and follow the Los Gatos Creek Trail nearly ten miles down through Vasona, Oak Meadow, and on into Campbell and San Jose, is managed through decisions made by four groups with different responsibilities. A railroad nonprofit sets its own seasonal hours. A county parks department coordinates with a water district on an invasive species problem that has nothing to do with trains or races. A civic club plots a road race route it has run for decades. The Town of Los Gatos handles the parking booth at the gate.

The park may feel like one place to the person walking through it, while its activities follow separate schedules. Checking the relevant schedule can help with planning.

If Vasona and Oak Meadow are part of your week, the dates worth keeping somewhere visible:

  • August 9 marked the end of the railroad's summer schedule. Expect a weekend-leaning pattern from here into October, with the two diesel engines typically taking over weekends once winter sets in.
  • September 14 marked the start of the stricter 30-day boat quarantine for any non-exempt vessel without a current county band, whether or not it's registered locally.
  • September 26 is race morning. Vasona and Oak Meadow trails belong to the Great Race from roughly 8am into mid-morning.
  • Later in the year, the railroad's Holiday Night Train typically returns once the Vasona light display goes up, worth watching for on the railroad's own calendar as the date gets set.

None of this changes what a house down the street is worth or when you'd want to list it. It's just the kind of local rhythm we track because we live inside it too, the same way we'd want to know before planning a Saturday around a park that quietly runs on four different schedules. If a bigger question about your home in Los Gatos is sitting in the back of your mind this fall, from timing a project around the season to understanding what a move might actually involve, Renovato & Co. is glad to talk it through.
