Welcome to Los Gatos

Los Gatos - Lifestyle and History- Stu Shepherd | Renovato & Co.

What is it like to live in Los Gatos?

Los Gatos residents consider their location the most beautiful in Silicon Valley. Nestled up against the heavily forested Santa Cruz Mountains, "The town of the cats" blends with nature to create a wonderful living experience. Only minutes from downtown San Jose or the high-tech industries, Los Gatos feels a world away.

Featuring many manicured neighborhoods and estates, Los Gatos still engenders a small-town feel, yet features an upscale downtown filled with eclectic shops and a range of quality dining establishments unrivaled in the valley. Downtown also features frequent live events, from a Farmer's Market to jazz concerts. You can always find a new favorite shop or something fun to do in Los Gatos!

Perhaps the natural gem of Los Gatos is not found on the stirring hillsides but in the expansive and beautiful park around Vasona Lake. A favorite escape for people all over the valley, Vasona is just one of numerous natural getaways around the city, and with ocean beaches just half an hour over the redwood-covered hills, nature is always there to remind you what living means. With the advantage of the warm valley temperatures but cooler shady evenings, Los Gatos boasts a climate to be envied.

Originally founded in 1887 as a town to serve the orchard growers which filled the region, Los Gatos grew slowly. By the dawn of the 20th century, Los Gatos had become known as an artist's colony, with many painters and others inspired by its beautiful surroundings. John Steinbeck wrote the famous novel The Grapes of Wrath there, while the sister classic movie stars Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine graduated from Los Gatos High School.

With the industrial boom which began in the 1950s, Los Gatos served as a suburban retreat for the growth of economic powerhouses in the cities to the north, but managed to retain many classic Victorian and historic structures, preserving its "Town" feel. Some structures were damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta "World Series" earthquake, but the town quickly recovered and healed the scars. Though the rail line from the Bay Area across the mountains to Santa Cruz has been replaced by the traffic on Highway 17, Los Gatos remains as much a destination as a through point.

Today, large Silicon Valley companies such as Netflix make Los Gatos their home, yet it still retains its eclectic and creative flair. Life in Los Gatos is to be savored!

What is it like to live in Monte Sereno?

With no commercial zoning, Monte Sereno is a small residential town bordered by Los Gatos on three sides and the city of Saratoga to the north. Away from freeways and major thoroughfares, Monte Sereno life is for those who wish to get away from city life. It was incorporated in 1957 to keep larger cities from disturbing its rural lifestyle.

In commune with its sister town of Los Gatos, Monte Sereno retains an artistic flair. John Steinbeck wrote "The Grapes of Wrath" and "Of Mice and Men" at an address in what is now within Monte Sereno, and "Painter of Light" Thomas Kincaid spent his last years there, living in a location as close to the ideals of his paintings as can be found.
