Welcome to Santa Clara

Santa Clara Lifestyle and History - Ryan Shepherd | Renovato & Co.

What is the history of Santa Clara?

Santa Clara, known as “The Mission City,” started with the founding of the Mission Santa Clara de Asís by Franciscan padres, or Spanish priests, on January 12, 1777. The identity of the people and the face of the land itself would change over the course of the next century, with the native Ohlone people integrated into the Spanish colonial lifestyle and the fertile land developed by the colonists into ranches, orchards, and lumber yards. When Mexico gained independence in 1821, Santa Clara became a part of Mexico. The Mexican governor would provide land grants during this time aimed at the advancement of local agricultural industries. American settlers started occupying the land in the 1840s. The area again changed hands over the course of that decade, with California becoming a state of the US in 1850.

Santa Clara incorporated in 1852. The city would become home to the largest seed producer in the world at the time, J.M. Kimberline and Co., known especially for flower and vegetable seeds. In 1869, the introduction of the Transcontinental Railroad allowed fruit and other produce to be shipped across the US then exported with relative ease, and product from Santa Clara Valley found its way across the pond to England and even as far as Asia. Santa Clara would remain relatively static and small until World War II in the 1940s and the invention of the semiconductor chip in the 1950s. The new and rapidly growing electronics industry would evolve Santa Clara into the city it is today.

Entertainment amenities include the popular concert and sports venue Levi’s Stadium, the amusement park California’s Great America, the many nightclubs near Santa Clara’s downtown district, and more. While a slight majority of Santa Clara residents do rent—the percentage influenced by college students and developing professionals—Santa Clara is a thoroughly pleasant place to own a home.
