Welcome to Saratoga

Saratoga - Lifestyle and History - Ryan Shepherd | Renovato & Co.

What is the history of Saratoga?

The city of Saratoga began with the construction of a sawmill in 1848 by William Campbell. A toll road was built in the 1850s to connect parts of the Santa Clara Valley. During this time of development, Jud Caldwell discovered a rich mineral spring slightly east of the area that would become Saratoga. In 1865, the area was officially named Saratoga due to the chemical composition of the spring, which was nearly identical to the water in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Seeking to emulate the success of the resorts in New York, the Pacific Congress Springs Resort popped up twelve miles southwest of the city of San Jose. Water from the spring was bottled and served at the resort as well as shipped across the western United States. Gold and silver prospecting attracted more people in the late 1800s, and Saratoga soon became a proper town. Some of the buildings from this time period still exist; they dot the corners of Route 9 and the intersection at 3rd Street.

Quarrying and mining sustained the town for more than a century. As Silicon Valley started to become densely populated, more people began to move to Saratoga seeking its tranquil and comfortable environment.
