Welcome to Sunnyvale

Sunnyvale Clara Lifestyle and History - Ryan Shepherd | Renovato & Co.

What is the history of Sunnyvale?

The land that would become Sunnyvale was settled by the Murphy family in 1844. In 1850, Martin Murphy, Jr. would have his house built to his specifications in Bangor, Maine and shipped around Cape Horn for assembly in Sunnyvale. The house stood as the Murphy family estate and then as a State Historical Landmark until it was demolished in 1961 after suffering irreparable fire damage. Murphy left other marks on history such as bringing the railroad through Sunnyvale and helping to establish the Convent of Notre Dame and Santa Clara University.

The Murphy family gave Sunnyvale its first name, Murphy’s Station. The name of the community was later changed to Encinal. The community finally settled on the name Sunnyvale in 1912. Sunnyvale was a major fruit-processing center until the construction of a nearby U.S. Navy base in the 1930s and the Joshua Henry Iron Works in 1942. This shift to industry remains Sunnyvale’s economic focus to this day, as the city now produces electronics.

What is it like to live in Sunnyvale?

Sunnyvale is a quiet suburbia, a great place for families. Residents of Sunnyvale socialize with each other at local venues such as the restaurants, cafes, parks, and gyms. Since many of the most exciting locations of Silicon Valley are so conveniently close by, Sunnyvale residents often visit different parts of the Valley for their recreation and enrichment. That said, Sunnyvale’s downtown is developing and is contributing to the city’s own charm. Regardless of where the residents go, they can feel comfortable in the fact they can return to the safety of Sunnyvale’s neighborhoods at night.
